NORTH SMITHFIELD- Eugene D. Moorehouse, 97, of North Smithfield, passed away on Monday, December 30, 2013 at the Holiday Retirement Home in Manville, RI surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of Wanda K. (Iskierski) Moorehouse for 66 years, who passed away on May 9, 2013.
He was born June 19, 1916 in New Bedford, MA to the late Ella Jane (Terpeny) and George Albert Moorehouse.
Gene graduated from New Bedford High School in 1935 where he excelled in track and field. He was drafted into the US Army's 4th Infantry Division as a 30 caliber machine gunner out of Flushing, Long Island, NY on February 24, 1941 at the age of 24. He was a machine gunner for one year, then got transferred to the 84th Infantry Division (the Railsplitters) from Illinois and became the company clerk working at the Army Regimental Headquarters. When he was discharged from the Army 4 1/2 years later on October 25, 1945 he had attained the rank of Master Sergeant. He was awarded a Bronze Star for meritorious service and received a metal for Ardennes Forest. He worked for the S. S. Kresge Corporation (Kmart) for 40 years as a stock room manager before retiring in 1981. Much of his career was spent working in the downtown Woonsocket Jupiter Discount store where he met his future wife Wanda. They were married on May 17, 1947 at St Paul's Church in Blackstone, MA. He was generous, easy going, and always willing to help out whenever needed. He enjoyed reading, spending time with his family, and sharing his stories about his younger years and World War II. His easy going nature attributed to his longevity. He often said "I don't worry about things that I cannot control".
He is survived by his loving children Gary E. Moorehouse of North Smithfield, Bonnie-Jean and her husband Bruce Wood of Woonsocket, Felicia J. and her husband Michael Nelson of North Attleboro, MA and grandchildren Darrell Wood of Woonsocket and Savanna and Kyle Nelson of North Attleboro. He was the brother of the late Alice Caswell of Acushnet.
Visitation hours are Sunday, January 5, 2014 from 4:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. at Kubaska Funeral Home, 33 Harris Ave. Woonsocket, RI.
His Funeral will be held Monday, January 6, 2014 starting at the funeral home at 9:30 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 A.M. at St. John the Evangelist Church, 63 Church St., Slatersville, RI.
Relatives & Friends are invited. Burial will be private at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Eugene's memory to the North Attleboro Girls Track Organization, 109 Lyman St. North Attleboro, MA 02760.
