WOONSOCKET- Bernard M. Chamberland, Age 85, died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on January 1, 2014.
Born October 10, 1928 in his parents' home in Woonsocket, Rhode Island he was a loving and devoted son to the late Irene (Marcoux) Chamberland and Joseph Chamberland of Canada.
He resided in Woonsocket before moving to Bellingham with his wife and children for 26 years before moving to North Fort Myers, Florida for 14 years and then returning to Woonsocket, Rhode Island for the last 11 years.
He is survived by his sister, Doris Danieli and his brother Robert Chamberland and his wife Carol of South Gulf Cove, Florida. Bernard was predeceased by his sisters, Jeannette Ballas of Bellingham, MA and Theresa Picard of Cape Cod, MA. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews that he shared many special memories with, especially Danny who always held a special place in his heart.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 33 years, Mary (Meo) Chamberland to whom he was a devoted, faithful and loving husband.
He served in the United States Army and fought in World War II and was honorably discharged after being injured during the war. He was employed at Wescott Construction as a labor foreman (local 609) for 30 years in which he retired early to care for his wife before she lost her 11 year battle to breast cancer at the age of 56. He was one of the founding members of the Bellingham Sportsman Club in which he volunteered for many years as well as built the club. He was a devoted Catholic who until he became ill, went to church seven days a week.
He was a loving, caring and devoted father & father in-law known as "Pops" and "Big Poppi" to his 6 children and their spouses: Julie Ann Kocian of Portland, Oregon (deceased) and her husband Jim, Donna Bois of North Smithfield, RI and her husband Roger, Jeffrey Chamberland of Woonsocket, RI and his wife Jeanne, Albert Chamberland of Lincoln, RI and his wife Beth, Alan Chamberland of Pascoag, RI and his wife Sherri, Maria Gerrior of Woonsocket, RI and her husband Kenny.
Bernard A.K.A. "Pepere" and "Pep" was a dedicated grandfather and is survived by 21 grandchildren. He was close to all of them throughout his life and shared individual bonds with each and every one. They are: Damon, David, Jennifer, Kelly, Jonathan, Jessica, Kevin, Timmy, Kayla, Krysta, Keith, Billy, Hailey, Zack, Tori, Adam, Jack, Cassidy, Daniel, A.J. and Sara. He is also survived by his 17 great grandchildren who he was very proud of and loved whole heartedly. They are: Amber, Brandon, Madison, Alyssa, Miguel, Joshua, Kelsey, Jose, Patrick, Riley, Gabriel, Helena, Dylan Rose, Nicholas, Jillian, Kyle and Karyssa He lived a full, beautiful life and will be sadly missed by his family and all who knew him.
Funeral will be held on Wednesday, January 8th at 9:00AM from CARTIER'S FUNERAL HOME, 151 So. Main St. (Rte 126), Bellingham, MA with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00AM at All Saints Church, 323 Rathbun St., Woonsocket, RI. Interment will follow at St. Jean Baptiste Cemetery, Bellingham, MA. Visiting hours are on Tuesday, January 7th from 5 to 8PM at the funeral home. To sign gust book visit
