NORTH SMITHFIELD- Stergios P. "Steve" Floru, 84, of North Smithfield, died Monday, January 13, 2014 in his home. He was the husband of Viola R. (Tanko) Floru, whom he married October 7, 1956.
Born in Veria, Greece, he was the son of the late Pavel and Stergiani (Aganostou) Floru.
Steve was the co-owner of Floru's Restaurant for 41 years until its closing in 1997. He then worked in the deli at Stop & Shop for 14 years. He was an army veteran, serving during the Korean War. Steve was a member of St. John the Baptist Romanian Orthodox Church, where he was a council member and past treasurer. He was a past member of the YMCA and the VFW in Woonsocket. Steve loved spending time with his grandchildren and was an avid Red Sox fan.
Besides his wife, Viola, he leaves their two sons, Paul S. Floru and his companion Mary Wojcik and Arthur J. Floru and his wife Olga, both of No. Smithfield; their daughter, Gina A. Taktikos of Woonsocket; his brother, George P. Floru of No. Smithfield; two sisters, Keri Petrides of No. Smithfield and Ida Lovely of Blackstone; five grandchildren, Stephanie, Maria and Steven Taktikos, all of Woonsocket and Sasha and Anya Floru of No. Smithfield; and many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his sister, Atheana Ligorus.
His funeral will be held Friday, January 17, 2014 at 10 AM from the Holt Funeral Home, 510 So. Main St., Woonsocket with a service at 11 AM in St. John the Baptist Romanian Orthodox Church, 501 E. School St., Woonsocket. Burial will follow in St. John the Baptist Romanian Orthodox Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday from 5-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Because He Lives, 323 Rathbun St., Woonsocket, RI 02895 or to the St. John the Baptist Romanian Orthodox Perpetual Care Cemetery Fund, 501 East School St., Woonsocket, RI 02895.
