Effort to deal with damaged, abandoned property enters the demolition phase

WOONSOCKET — Snow wasn’t the only thing falling to the ground in the city on Monday — at 121 Providence St., it was the remains of a fire-damaged city tenement that were coming down under the bite of a large John Deere excavator.

Peter St. Lawrence of R&P Construction and Demolition out of Johnston, and a company employee, Anthony Carnevale, only needed about three hours to knock down most of the four-unit, wood-frame apartment Monday morning and spent the rest of the snowy afternoon pulling out salvageable metals and other materials from the resulting debris pile.

The demolition was the first for a damaged or abandoned and vandalized property on Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt’s list of the “Dirty Thirty,” a group targeted for either demolition or rehabilitation within a short period of time.
