Town budget battle could threaten spring sports in North Smithfield

NORTH SMITHFIELD â€“ Long before Mike Cicerone began his senior year at North Smithfield High, he had thought out his plan for it.
Already the starting quarterback, he would be the Class of 2014 President, would play a key role on the varsity basketball team that last winter clinched the R.I. Division II title with a perfect 24-0 record and â€“ come springtime, just weeks before Graduation Day â€“ would be a starter for head coach Jon Leddyâ€™s baseball squad.
Right now, however, itâ€™s become a blur. Because of a political â€śmess,â€ť as some people with vested interests in Northmen athletics have phrased it, town officials have announced the school will not field a single spring sport this season.
