Burrillville gridders see playoff hopes end

November 13, 2010

Burrillville QB Roger Blanchard completed 13 of 14 passes during a heartbreaking 28-26 loss to Middletown on Friday night.

MIDDLETOWN --- Burrillville High’s bid for a Division III playoff berth came up short on Friday night in its “must-win” duel with Middletown High at the Gaudet Middle School.
The host Islanders were able to snuff a two-point conversion by the Broncos that would have tied the score with 30 seconds to play in the contest, and in the process, they were able to hold on for a wild 28-26 victory.
The Islanders improved to 5-3 and will be the No. 4 seed in the postseason behind unbeaten Rogers, Moses Brown (6-2), and Lincoln (5-3), who owns the head-to-head tiebreaker with Middletown. Burrillville closed league play with a 4-4 mark.
Fullback Kevin Deschamps scored three touchdowns for the Broncos on short runs of seven, three, and three yards, and Roger Blanchard, who went 13-of-14 passing for 96 yards, scored the other TD on a one-yard keeper.
On the late two-point conversion attempt, Blanchard tried to fire a pass for the two points, but he was dragged down on the play and was only able to get off a short lob throw that went nowhere.
The Islanders were led by standout tailback Rico McCray, who ran for 107 yards on 13 carries and scored on a 69-yard run.
