BLACKSTONE- Joseph A. Simmons, 88, of Blackstone, MA passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at Milford Regional Medical Center with his loving family by his side. He was the beloved husband for 50 years of Muriel (Dalpe) Simmons.
Born in Providence, RI on April 8, 1925, he was the son of the late John and Lena (Souza) Simmons, Sr. He was the loving father of Susan Simmons of Blackstone, MA and Joseph A. Simmons, Jr. and his wife, Jacqueline of Norfolk, MA, and leaves his cherished grandchildren, Nicholas, Abigail and Benjamin Simmons. He was the brother of the late John and Dorothy Simmons. Joe regarded his brothers and sisters in laws as his family.
A resident of Blackstone for 42 years formerly of Bellingham, Joe was a plant supervisor at Okonite Wire & Cable of Ashton, RI for over 30 years until retiring.
He was a Word War II United States Navy Veteran receiving the World War II Victory Medal, the American Area Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Area Medal with 1 star, and the European African Area Medal with 2 stars.
He was a communicant of St. Paul's Church of Blackstone.
He loved yard work, gardening and doing home improvement projects. He was an avid vacationer visiting the Islands and cruising to Bermuda with his wife and family. Joe was a devoted sports fan of the Red Sox, Patriots and Celtics. In his youth, Joe was a boxer and swimmer and belonged to the Olneyville Boys Club in Providence and won many medals in boxing and swimming. One of Joe’s greatest joys was going to sporting events for his children and grandchildren. Devoted to his family, Joe will be greatly missed.
Funeral will be held on Monday, February 17th at 9:00AM from CARTIER'S FUNERAL HOME, 151 So. Main St. (Rte 126), Bellingham, MA with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00AM at St. Paul's Church, 48 Saint Paul Street, Blackstone, MA. Interment will follow at St. Jean Baptiste Cemetery, Bellingham. Visiting hours are on Sunday, February 16th from 4 to 7PM at the funeral home.
