JUST IN: Woonsocket fire victim dies

February 20, 2014

WOONSOCKET – A man who was badly burned in a fire at his apartment on the seventh floor of St. Germain Manor Saturday night has died.
The victim, who was in his mid-50s, died at Rhode Island Hospital Wednesday, said Detective Jamie Paone, spokeswoman for the Woonsocket police. Hospital and other sources previously identified him as Jeffrey S. Reyor of Apt. 705, 429 East School St.
Reyor reportedly suffered burns over 75 percent of his body and had been a patient at the hospital’s trauma center since the fire.
Woonsocket Fire Chief Tim Walsh said firefighters responded to a report of a man screaming at the public high rise shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday. They later pulled Reyor from smoke and flames in his apartment and tried to resuscitate him.
Robert T. Kulik, the executive director of the Woonsocket Housing Authority, which operates the high-rise, said the fire damage in Reyor’s apartment appeared to be concentrated in his hospital-type bed. Kulik said the bed was so badly incinerated it looked like charcoal.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal, the Woonsocket police and the Woonsocket Fire Department. Walsh said earlier this week that investigators were hoping to interview the victim before issuing a statement about the cause.
Without talking to the victim, he said, investigators may never be able to say exactly how the fire started, but they might make a statement about a suspected cause.
