McGair: North Smithfield to meet Burrillville in opener of Division III divisional playoffs

February 27, 2014

The brackets for the divisional tournaments in boys’ basketball have been released and there’s two preliminary games of note set for Friday night.

In Division II, defending champion and No. 10 seed Cumberland travels to Central Falls to face the seventh-seeded Warriors. The two II-North rivals squared off twice during the regular season with C.F. posting a 65-51 win at Cumberland on Dec. 20. The Clippers returned the favor last Wednesday with a 49-47 triumph at the Warriors’ gym.

Friday’s winner will face second seed Barrington in the quarterfinals. That game is set for next Wednesday at a site that remains to be determined. On the same night, No. 3 seed Tolman squares off with fellow II-Central member and No. 6 seed Exeter/West Greenwich.

In Division III, you have a preliminary-round matchup involving two teams that crossed paths as recent as this past Tuesday night. Burrillville, the eighth seed, hosts defending champ and No. 9 seed North Smithfield. The Broncos wound up with the home-court advantage for this one after defeating the Northmen, 38-35. The victory also enabled Burrillville to clinch the division title.

Friday’s North Smithfield-Burrillville winner advances to face top seed East Greenwich next Wednesday in the quarters.
