BEER NEAR — Legendary brewer Yuengling is bringing its beer to stores in Mass. — but not R.I.

BELLINGHAM -- Brian Bender, the owner of Denny’s Liquors, hasn’t been so excited since Coors crossed the Mississippi.

After an absence of more than 20 years, Yuengling beer returns to package stores in the Bay State today, offering Rhode Island beer lovers yet another reason to spend their money on the other side of the state line.
“This is big,” says Bender, whose store is a few hundred yards over the Woonsocket line. “I haven’t seen demand like this since Coors came East.”
Yuengling is the product of D.G. Yuengling & Sons, the oldest brewery in America, founded in Pottsville, Pa., by a German immigrant in 1829. The company hit a rough patch in the late 1980s that forced it to shrink its footprint, but it’s on the move again now that production is over a million barrels a year.

Distributed in just 15 states, mostly in the mid-Atlantic region, Yuengling will be sold exclusively in Massachusetts among New England states. Though it’s been available in the state’s bars and clubs for a week, the closest package stores that carried Yuengling before today were in New York – since 1993, anyway.
