With Fox's speakership tottering, Democrats call caucus

March 21, 2014

PROVIDENCE – House Speaker Gordon Fox’s second-in-command in the Democrat-dominated House of Representatives, Majority Leader Nicholas Mattiello, said Friday he is not looking to push Fox out of the top post, but if the job becomes open, Mattiello says he has the votes to become Speaker.

A large faction of the Democratic caucus in the House of Representatives convened Friday evening at the Marriott Hotel to mull how they are going to proceed in the wake of a raid by state and federal law enforcement officials on the Statehouse office of House Speaker Gordon Fox earlier in the day.

Looking to consolidate his support in case an election for Speaker is in the offing, Mattiello, a Cranston representative, called the Democrats together while the dust was still settling from the phalanx of State Police, FBI, and IRS agents who entered Fox’s Statehouse office and his East Side home, taking out boxes of evidence. Law enforcement officials were mum about what they are investigating and what role they believe Fox played in it after spending five hours in Fox’s third-floor office.
