Clippers clinch Div. II state crown

March 21, 2014

The Cumberland High School boys’ hockey team celebrates the Div. II state championship win over PSW, by a final score of 3-2, at Meehan Auditorium on Friday night. The title is the team’s first since 2008, and caps off a remarkable 26-1 season for the Clippers. (Photo by Ernest A. Brown)

PROVIDENCE – When it was all over, the Cumberland High players not on the ice tossed their helmets, sticks and gloves into the air and raced toward junior goalkeeper Leo Lake.

Once they arrived, in full throttle, they pushed Lake backward, knocking his cage clean off their pins.

That’s how the Clippers celebrated their first state title since 2008. They did so with what turned out to be a nail-biting 3-2 victory over the gritty PCD/ST. Raphael/Wheeler Co-op squad in the R.I. Division II Tournament’s best-of-three series at Brown University’s Meehan Auditorium on Friday night.
