McGair: Update on Matt Barnes; Video introduction of the 2014 PawSox

April 1, 2014

PAWTUCKET – Matt Barnes will not be part of Pawtucket’s rotation at the onset of the 2014 International League season. A sore shoulder limited the 23-year-old to just one inning in spring training.

Just how much time will Barnes miss? Red Sox Director of Player Development Ben Crockett didn’t provide a definitive timetable at Tuesday’s PawSox Media Day fete at McCoy Stadium, though it was encouraging to learn that the Barnes is pitching in extended spring training down in Fort Myers, Fla.

“He needs to go through the progression and feel good and build up some innings to be a starter. It’s a matter of getting him reps,” said Crockett. “He’s in a good spot right now and threw once in a game before we left.”

Barnes, ranked the No. 40 prospect in baseball by Baseball America before the 2013 season, went 5-10 with a 4.33 ERA in 24 starts with Double-A Portland last season. He made three starts for the PawSox, two coming in the Governors’ Cup playoffs.

In the interim, Pawtucket’s rotation will feature in order Allen Webster, Anthony Ranaudo, Rubby De La Rosa, Jeremy Kehrt and Chris Hernandez. Webster will draw the Opening Day nod against Lehigh Valley on Thursday night.

As far as the rest of the 2014 Pawtucket squad, here’s a video of the players and coaches getting introduced on Tuesday:
