Storm topples tree from mayor's yard into car; driver escapes serious injury

May 4, 2014

WOONSOCKET – Strong winds Sunday evening caused a freak accident that injured a woman when a tree trunk broke from a large maple tree and fell on her car as she drove up Prospect Street in front of Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt’s home.
The unidentified woman, although trapped in the vehicle by the fallen limb, appears to have escaped serious injury, police said late Sunday night, and was expected to be released by Rhode Island Hospital.
At the scene, the woman was calmed by neighborhood residents running to help, including the mayor’s husband, Ed Hunt.
Rescue personnel and police were quickly on the scene of the 7:25 p.m. accident, but had to use emergency power tools to stabilize the tree trunk and move it so that unidentified woman could be extricated from her car.
She was reported to have been conscious at the scene during the rescue effort and was transported to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence for treatment, according to Fire Department officials.
