Gutsy pitching can’t save Tigers’ season in 3-2 loss

PROVIDENCE – The final game of Tolman High’s season featured an all too familiar pattern: Plenty of good pitching to go around, but not nearly enough hitting to carry the day.

“Especially over the last third of the season, our pitchers have been holding teams to three or four runs. In Rhode Island Division II baseball, you’re doing all right,” stated Tigers coach Theo Murray.

Behind pitching performances that could only be labeled as gutsy with a dash of guile for good measure, No. 13 Tolman stood toe-to-toe with a Classical outfit that had already beaten the Tigers once in the playoffs. A second defeat would require additional innings as Murray’s Tigers and the fourth-seeded Purple were embroiled in a 2-2 deadlock in a Division II/Region IV losers’ bracket contest Monday afternoon/early evening at Davis Park.

The affair required nine innings as Classical staged a 3-2 walk-off victory that officially lowered the curtain on Tolman’s season. With runners on first and second and one down in the bottom of the ninth, Tim Shea sent a screaming base hit into center field to chase home fellow Purple captain Aljenis Candelier with the deciding run.
