Cumberland American concludes pool play on winning note

August 6, 2014

Cumberland American's Addison Kopack rounds second base after hitting a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning against Williston, Vermont at Breen Field in Bristol, Conn. on Wednesday. The round tripper was the third of the New England Little League regionals for Kopack, who celebrated his 13th birthday on the same day that saw CALL conclude the pool-play portion of the tournament with a victory over Vermont. BRISTOL, Conn.  –  Perhaps 30 minutes after the Cumberland American All-Stars had sustained a 5-3 walk-off loss to Fairfield American of Connecticut on Tuesday night, manager Dave Belisle conducted a meeting in the team dorm.

In essence, he told his bunch to keep their heads up, that they had played well in the defeat and to believe in themselves as they always did.

“(Their) mood was surprisingly good,” Belisle explained. “They weren’t down at all. I just said they should let it go, tomorrow’s another day and we’ll go at it again. They let it go.”

And then some. Righty starter Sean Meers and southpaw Brendan Wright pitched solidly overall while Addison Kopack celebrated his 13th birthday in style as CALL rolled to a satisfying 8-5 victory over Williston, Vt.’s best in the pool play finale of the Little League New England Regional Tournament.
