Cumberland stays alive at Little League World Series on Davock’s walk-off double

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — As 10,732 eyes stared at him and millions more watched worldwide, Cumberland’s shortstop/pitcher CJ Davock blocked it all out.

It was just he and the pitcher. The frustration of an inning earlier was gone. An opportunity awaited and redemption was at hand.

Davock pounded on it, earned it and kept a dream alive.

Davock capped a furious sixth-inning rally Saturday night at Lamade Stadium, belting a two-run, two-out walk-off double that capped a three-run rally and lifted Cumberland to a thrilling 8-7 win over Tennessee at the Little League World Series.

“These kids haven’t quit all year. We play to the last out,” Rhode Island manager Dave Belisle said. “They have done it all summer but it’s hard to do it on this stage. It takes a lot of guts and determination and they have that. The word fight is the word I remember when I think about them.”

Cumberland eliminated Tennessee from world title contention and stayed in the hunt for a championship of its own. The New England champions next play Monday against the winner of Sunday’s Nevada/Illinois game.

Whatever happens in that game, Cumberland will always share the experience of winning one of the more dramatic games in the 75-year history of the Little League World Series. Cumberland appeared to have the game won in the top of the sixth. Then it seemed lost.

Then, when many teams might have buckled, Cumberland won it again.
