PASCOAG - Brother René J. M. Chenard, S.C., 90, of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Provincial House, Pascoag, RI, died August 15, 2014 at Overlook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Pascoag, RI. Born in Lewiston, ME, he was the son of the late Joseph and Emilia (Therriault) Chenard. Brother René died on the 70th anniversary of his first religious profession.
Brother René entered the Brothers of the Sacred Heart at Arthabaska, PQ, Canada in 1940. He pronounced his first vows at Arthabaska in 1944, and his perpetual vows in Victoriaville, PQ, Canada, in 1950. He completed a Bachelor of Science degree through the University of East Georgia.
Brother René served in assignments as a teacher in Canada from 1944-1948. In 1948, Brother René started teaching in the United States, at parish schools in Biddeford and Old Town, Maine, and in schools in Andover, MA, Woonsocket, RI, Sacred Heart Academy in Central Falls, RI for fourteen years, and for over 30 years at Mt. St. Charles Academy, Woonsocket, RI. He taught eighth grade math at Mount for most of those years in addition to assisting in the bookstore. He retired to the Provincial House in 2008.
Brother René is survived by his sister, Liane Therriault and her daughters Doris and Joline, his sister Lorraine Gelinas, also of Lewiston, Maine, and her daughters, Claire, Suzanne and Cecile, his sister-in-law, Yvette Chenard and her daughter Florence, and the children of Rosaire, his deceased brother, nieces Muriel and Jeanne, and nephew Robert, all of Lewiston, Maine, and many grandnieces and grandnephews. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Gerard, and Raymond.
The wake will be held at the Provincial House, 685 Steere Farm Road, Pascoag, RI, Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Mass of Christian Burial in the Chapel of the Provincial House at 11 a.m. Burial will be in the Brothers' Cemetery in Pascoag. In lieu of flowers, donations in Brother René's memory can be made to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Retirement Fund, Business Office, Brothers of the Sacred Heart, 685 Steere Farm Road, Pascoag, RI 02859. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brown Funeral Home 1496 Victory Hwy., Oakland RI.
