CENTRAL FALLS – Central Falls dedicated its latest Navigant Tip-Off Tournament championship to former coach Joe Handy.
“We wanted to get this one for Joe,” said new C.F. coach Nick Lafreniere on Tuesday evening after his Warriors rolled to a 38-24 victory over Davies Tech in the tournament final. “Joe was a mentor and a friend to me and a great coach. I talked to him on the phone today and told him we wanted to win for him.”
Lafreniere and his players are trying to maintain a great winning tradition established by previous C.F. teams. They got off to a good start to their season by winning two games in the Navigant tournament. Kayla Camara led the way against Davies, scoring 13 points. Anjelique Cooley added 9 points for the Warriors, who led 13-9 at halftime before pulling away in the second half.
“We played better defense in the second half and got some easy transition baskets,” Lafreniere admitted. “Kayla did a good job tonight. She is probably our smartest player. She has a lot of skills and potential. She played within her limits tonight and I was proud of her for that.”
Dy Ann Cardona led Davies with 8 points.
C.F. returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Tolman in a 7 p.m. game. Davies will host North Smithfield in a 4:15 p.m. game on Thursday.
