Saints top Woonsocket in Lynch Tournament

December 11, 2010

PAWTUCKET — St. Raphael Academy looked a lot sharper than Woonsocket during the finals of the Dennis M. Lynch Jr. Memorial Tournament on Saturday night.
The Saints got 15 points and 11 assists from tournament MVP Charles Correa while cruising to a 66-53 victory that wasn’t as close as the final score indicated. Leading 34-20 at halftime, the Saints went on a 14-2 run to open the second half.
Woonsocket, which was denied inside position by the Saints’ front line, managed just one hoop in the first 10 minutes and 19 seconds of the second half.
“We got our butts kicked,” Woonsocket coach Kyle Ivey-Jones admitted. “It was a total lack of team effort. We have a lot of work ahead of us.”
The Villa Novans got 13 points from guard Edwin Jones, who never gave up in the second half and constantly drove hard to the basket in search of points. Woonsocket point guard Jesse Charette finished with 8 points and was outplayed by his opposite number, the smooth-as-silk Correa.
Woonsocket trailed 11-10 in the first half before the Saints went on a 9-0 run that was triggered by a pressing defense. Correa and running mate Cesar Mejia did a lot of ballhawking. When Woonsocket did get the ball inside to its front line, SRA’s 6-foot-6 Trevor Vasey and 6-foot-4 Devon Robertson were there to block shots and play tough defense.
Korey Lawrence gave the Novans nine points and Andreas Brackett came off the bench to produce nine points and some spark on the offensive boards. The Villa Novans got SRA in foul trouble midway through the second half and ended up shooting 31 free throws, making 18 of them, to make the final score respectable.
Woonsocket will visit Mount Pleasant on Monday in its Division I opener.
