Sister Lina Poirier

MARLBOROUGH- Sister Lina Poirier, a Sister of St. Anne, known in religion as Sister Mary Joseph of Jesus, died at the age of 98 at Marie Esther Health Center in this city on December 24, 2010. She was in the 76th year of religious life.
She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Albertine (Joinville) Poirier of Manville, RI. She completed her elementary education at St. James School in that city and obtained her high school diploma at St. Anne Academy, Marlborough. She held a B.E. degree from the College of Saint Rose and her Certification in Pedagogy from the Vincentian Normal Institute, both in Albany, NY. She was also certified in Home Management, Advanced Principles of Clothing Construction, and Interior Decorating.
In 1932, she entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Anne in Lachine, Quebec, and pronounced her religious vows 1934. Sister Poirier returned to the States immediately after her profession to begin her teaching ministry in parochial schools in Holyoke, Easthampton, Worcester, Webster and Marlborough, MA. Sister then taught at St. Joseph School in Cohoes, NY, for many years, and at schools in Central Falls and Manville, RI. Upon retiring from teaching,she served as coordinator, seamstress, and switchboard operator.
Sister is survived by her sisters in Community and two sisters, Irene Lamothe, of Vero Beach, FL, and Grace Remillard of Woonsocket, RI, and several nieces and nephews.
She will be waked at St. Anne Convent, 720 Boston Post Road East, Marlborough, MA, on Tuesday, December 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. with a prayer service at 4 p.m.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Wednesday, December 29, in the Convent Chapel with burial in Saint Mary Cemetery, Marlborough, MA.
