SCITUATE- Benz, Fritz A., 82, of North Scituate, died Sunday, January 2, 2011 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Ann M. (Butler) Benz.
Born in Providence, a son of the late Edwin H. and Mary B. (Coleman) Benz.
Mr. Benz was a construction engineer and served in various capacities throughout his 40 plus year career including the Army Corp of Engineers, working in the US, Greenland and Saudi Arabia before retiring in 1990. Mr. Benz was a pioneer in the RI ski industry, helping to bring the sport of skiing to families in Southeastern New England. He owned and operated the former Fritz Benz Ski Shops in Cumberland, Franklin, MA and Yawgoo Valley Ski Area. An avid community volunteer, he served on the North Scituate library and zoning boards, N. Scituate Water Commission and was a member of the Pawtuxet Valley River Authority.
He served as a Eucharistic minister at RI Hospital and St. Joseph Church, N. Scituate and served on the church Building committee; a member of the Feeney Council Knights of Columbus and managed the building of the Chopmist Hill Senior Center. His hobbies included woodworking, skiing, traveling and hockey.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Karen A., Stephen M. and Donald J. Benz, Martha E. Teahan, Fritz A. Jr., and Kristen A. Benz. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He was the brother of Robert C. and John S. Benz and the late Barbara, Donald and Edwin Benz.
His funeral will be held Thursday, January 6, 2011 at 9AM from the TUCKER-QUINN Funeral Chapel, 643 Putnam Ave. (Rte.44) Greenville, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in St. Joseph Church, Danielson Pike, North Scituate. Burial will be private. Visitation Wednesday 4-8PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions to San Miguel School, P.O. Box 6367, Providence, RI 02904 or Home & Hospice Care of RI, 1085 North Main St., Providence, RI 02904 will be appreciated.
