Down by three goals with less than five minutes to play in its marquee battle for first place with Division I rival Moses Brown on Saturday night, Mount St. Charles responded in dramatic fashion with three goals to send the game into overtime.
Unfortunately for the Mounties, they were unable to bury any of their three shots in the extra five-minute session and were forced to settle for a wild 6-6 tie with the Quakers at Thayer Arena.
Mike Magerman sparked the comeback for the Mounties (6-0-1) by scoring twice in the final 2:44 of play, and it was his second goal with 8.3 seconds on the clock that amazingly knotted the contest.
Trevor Plante had made it a 6-4 game with 4:52 to play with his team-best 11th goal of the season, and Magerman followed that with a power-play goal of his own to make it a one-goal contest.
The Quakers, who are 6-1-1 and still tied with the Mounties for first place in the standings with their 12 points, received a standout showing from their freshman goalie Conor Friend, who ended up with 28 goals as MSC outshot Moses Brown by a 34-24 margin.
The Mounties, meanwhile, gave up the most goals in a regular-season game in recent memory, and this was coming off the four scores they surrendered to Cranston West in Fridayâs 6-4 victory at Adelard Arena.
Alex Erban also scored a pair of goals for the Mounties, including the duelâs first score only 70 seconds into play when he flipped in a pass from Brian Campbell, who was unable to pull the trigger on a rebound in front of the Quakersâ net, but instead, tapped the puck across the goal to Erban.
But at 3:48, the Quakers tied the contest when Eric Salzillo made good on a pass from Robert Rinn, and at 9:30, Evan Jacques gave the Quakers the lead with his team-best ninth goal by scoring on a 2-on-1 break with Salzillo.
The Mounties knotted the contest 3:33 into the second period when Callan Morrisseauâs pass from the side of the net hit the skate of a M.B. player and deflected past Friend.
But the Quakers again answered back with the next two goals to grab a 4-2 lead, as Rinn gave the Quakers back the lead at 4:18 and Nathan Farrington found the back of the net at 11:45.
Down, but not out, the Mounties did everything they could to get back into the game, and with 7:40 to go in the game, Erban got MSC to within a goal by scoring off a pass off the boards from Campbell.
But again, the Quakers responded with multiple scores. After Trevor Kacz got his team back on the board by deflecting a long shot past MSC goalie Dan Foster at 8:07, Cam Brown netted a goal a little over a minute later to give the Quakers a 6-3 command and what looked like control of the game.
But the Mounties kept everyone in the rink in their seats by quickly netting the next two goals to make it a one-goal nailbiter.
With 1:02 to go, the Mounties pulled Foster in favor of a sixth attacker, and the move paid huge dividends, when with seconds on the clock, Magerman squeezed a shot between Friendâs right pad and the post.
While the Mounties managed just three shots in OT, so did the Quakers, and no shot was bigger than the one Salzillo took with 2:10 to play on a partial breakaway that Foster stopped with a big right pad save.
The schedule continues to get tougher for the Mounties over the next couple of weekends. Next Friday at 9 p.m. at Adelard, they will battle Hendricken (5-1-1), and the following Friday at 9, fourth-place La Salle Academy (4-1-1) comes to town.
