J. Normand L. Vaillancourt, Ph.D., 77, of Woonsocket, died Friday, January 7, 2011 in Landmark Medical Center, Woonsocket. He was the husband of Alice L. (Paquin) Vaillancourt whom he married July 16, 1976. Born in Greenville, NH, he was the son of the late Adelard and Camilla (Thibault) Vaillancourt.
Mr. Vaillancourt retired as a Professor from Johnson & Wales University, Providence, where he also served as Chair of the Humanities Dept. Previously, he worked for Old Stone Bank and was a former La Salette Missionary Father. During his time as a La Salette, he studied in Jerusalem and Rome where he earned various degrees. He earned his Ph.D. in Sacred Scripture from Boston University and taught at Assumption College. Mr. Vaillancourt was a former District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler for the Elks Grand Lodge, and was an Exalted Ruler and Honorary Lifetime Member of the Woonsocket Elks Lodge. He was given distinction in 2008 as State Elk of the Year. He was also formerly a member of the Knights of Columbus and Club Richelieu. During his service to these organizations and to his parishes, Mr. Vaillancourt received many honors throughout the years. A caring and compassionate man, Normandâ€™s greatest loves in life were God, his family, his friends, and the people he had the opportunity to help and service during his lifetime.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, J. Normand L. Vaillancourt, II of Attleboro, MA, two daughters, Mercy M. Vaillancourt of Woonsocket and Christina M. Kilcline of Claremont, NH, three brothers, two sisters, two grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Maycee M. Vaillancourt and brother of the late Rene and Edmund Vaillancourt.
His funeral will be held Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at 9AM from Holt Funeral Home, 510 So. Main St., Woonsocket, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10AM in St. Agatha's Church, Woonsocket. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland. Calling hours are Tuesday from 4-7PM.
