NORTON, MA. - Zelmor (Zel) Levin, 97, of Norton, Massachusetts, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, Sunday Jan. 9, 2011, at Epoch Senior Health Care of Norton.
Born in Woonsocket, RI, Zel enjoyed a long and successful career as a newspaper reporter and editor. Zel's journalism career began at age 14, when he was named high school correspondent for The Woonsocket Call. Upon graduation, he was hired as a reporter for The Call. His journalism career was interrupted by five years of service as a captain in the Signal Corps of the US army in World War II, and upon discharge in 1946, he returned to the Call as Executive City Editor. Zel later became the general manager of the Call's radio station, WWON. He was best known for his daily morning radio talk show, Coffee An, a program he produced and moderated. Zel later joined the staff of the Pawtucket Times in 1969, where he was assistant managing editor for eight years, and when he retired from the Times, Zel returned to school at age 65, to earn both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees at RI College. At the same time, he produced a monthly newspaper for the Jewish Federation of RI until he retired to Welllfeet, Massachusetts with his beloved late wife, Esther (Cutler) Levin, where they lived until 2005. In retirement, Zel continued to write book reviews which were published at various newspapers across the country. Throughout his life, Zel remained very active in local politics, community service and Jewish affairs.
Son of the late Israel Levin and Jenny (Stoloff) Levin, Zel leaves behind two daughters, Jessie Birckhead and her husband, Taylor Birckhead of Bethlehem PA; Elise Freedman and her husband, Mark Freedman of Telford, PA; two grandaughters, Lindsay Birckhead and her husband, Robert Schweder of Bethleham, PA; Lauren Birckhead and her fiance, Michael Petri of Brooklyn NY; three sisters, Iris Jacobs of Sharon, MA, Ernestine Vogel of Boynton Beach, FL, the late Ada Arkanase, and his sister in law, Gertrude Cutler of NYC.
His funeral will be held Tuesday Jan, 11, 2011, at 10AM in Congregation B'nai Isreal, 224 Prospect St., Woonsocket. Burial will follow in B'nai Isreal cemetery, Mendon Rd., Woonsocket. Arrangments are under the direction of the Holt Funeral Home, 510 So. Main St., Woonsocket and the Chevrah Kaddisha.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Esther and Zel Levin, to Congregation B'nai Israel, 224 Prospect St, Woonsocket, RI 02895.
