Car crash kills city men

January 18, 2011

DOUGLAS, Mass. — Two Woonsocket men were killed when their car crashed broadside into an oncoming tractor trailer on Route 16 about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, the town's police department said.
The victims were identified as Marco Vargos, 40, and his passenger, Hugo Leonel Garcia-Deleon, 27, both of 108 Morin Heights Blvd.
Vargos' Toyota Camry was heading westbound on the town's main artery when he somehow lost control of the vehicle and swerved into the opposite lane. The passenger side of the Camry smashed into an oncoming Goya Foods rig whose driver “did everything he could to avoid that car,” said Police Chief Patrick T. Foley.
Vargos and Garcia-DeLeon were transported to Harrington Hospital in Webster, where they were pronounced dead from their injuries, said Foley.
“It's a sad day for those two people,” said Foley. “They were on their way to work and they lost their lives.”
The leading edge of a snowstorm had just begun making its way through Douglas when the accident happened, but Foley said the police don't believe slick roads were a factor in the crash. He said police have another theory on the cause, but he said the department wouldn't elaborate until the Massachusetts State Police, who are in charge of the investigation, release their findings.
The driver of the truck, Joel A. Lasanta, and a passenger, Julio F. Morales, were uninjured. Foley said Lasanta saw the Camry fishtailing toward him and did his best to move the big rig out of the way before the crash, but there wasn't time.
