Mount boys bomb La Salle, 7-2

January 21, 2011

Mount St. Charles Academy remained undefeated in Division I with a 7-2 victory over La Salle on Friday night.

WOONSOCKET --- The second period belonged to Mount St. Charles. So did the Mounties’ showdown with La Salle Academy on Friday night.
Zach Samborsky tallied a pair of goals during a high-scoring middle period that saw the Mounties light the lamp four times and eventually take off with a 7-2 win before one of the largest crowds of the season at Adelard Arena.
Brian Campbell also scored twice for the Mounties, who outshot the Rams by a 34-27 count -- 15-10 in the second period -- and turned in an all-around strong game against the team they swept in last year’s best-of-three Division I title series.
Juniors Steve Donahue and Ryan Berard also scored their first career varsity goals for the winners, and Donahue also assisted on two other scores, as did Brian Belisle and Shamus Maloney.
“I loved the way all three lines played,” said MSC coach Dave Belisle. “We got three goals from our blue line and two each from the other two lines. All three lines contributed tonight and I couldn’t ask for more.
“I also thought our defense played extremely well, We were missing one of our better defenseman (Dom Rovero), but the kids stepped up. La Salle is a very fast team, but we did a good job keeping them to the outside for much of the night.”
Not only did the victory keep the Mounties unbeaten in nine games at 8-0-1, it kept them in second place in the Division I standings and put some added distance between themselves and their Providence rivals, who dropped to 6-2-2 and now sit three points behind MSC.
Moses Brown, which has appeared in three more games than the Mounties, is in first place with a 9-1-1 mark that’s good for 19 points. The Quakers did not play last night.
“I was very, very pleased with this victory tonight,” said Belisle. “This was a good team game for us, a big win against a very good opponent, and I’m very happy with the way we played.”
Campbell gave the defending state champs a 1-0 lead after a period of play with his sixth goal of the season. It came immediately after the Rams killed a 5-on-3 power play that actually lasted two full minutes.
The Mounties then extended their lead to 3-0 in the opening minutes of the second period on Samborsky’s first goal at 2:49 on a hard slap shot from the center of the left faceoff circle and Berard’s score off a feed from Belisle on a nice 2-on-1 break.
The Rams finally got on the board with 2:48 to play in the period when Bob Fox oot his stick on loose puck in front of the MSC net and deposited it past goalie Dan Foster, but Campbell responded with his second goal 70 seconds later on a partial breakaway off a long offering from Ben Handanyan.
With 32 seconds left in the period, Dan Lucchetti sliced the Rams’ deficit to two, but the winners got that goal back just 15 seconds later on Samborsky’s second goal of the night and seventh of the season.
Donahue’s goal, which came 4:41 into the last period, was also the weirdest one of the contest. He took a long slap shot from the point that deflected off two La Salle players and found its way past Ryan.
“It was nice to see them score,” Belisle said of Donahue and Berard. “They work so hard and give us good shifts every night, and to see them be able to contribute on the scoresheet just makes it even sweeter as a coach.”
Alex Erban capped the scoring with 3:25 left in the game with an unassisted goal that turned out to be his 11th goal of the season.
