January 22, 2011

Cumberland High's Chris Duarte, second from left, ran a personal best time of 7.80 seconds while winning the 55-meter high hurdles on Saturday.

PROVIDENCE –The battle of unbeaten Northern Division powers proved to be no contest.
With victories in eight different events, including 1-2-3 sweeps in the 55-meter high hurdles and the 1,000, Cumberland High earned its eighth consecutive undefeated league season with a 64-45 win over previously-perfect Lincoln. The Clippers (8-0) and Lions (7-1) both defeated Mount St. Charles (4-4) in the tri meet, held at the Providence Athletic Facility (PAF).
Highlighting the Clippers’ efforts was a personal-best performance by Chris Duarte in the 55 hurdles. Duarte, among the best in the state in the event, won the race in 7.8 seconds to eclipse two-tenths of a second from his PB. Andrew Arone (9.0) and Brendon Abilheira-Cargill completed the sweep for the Blue and White.
Cumberland also collected the maximum nine points in the 1,000 with Matt Sutcliffe taking top honors with his time of 2:47.6. Trevor Crawley placed second at 2:50.4 and Matt Spavold was third in 2:50.8. Sutcliffe also was third in the 1,500 (4:30.6) and Crawley captured the 3,000 (9:20.5).
Ryan Rei was a double-winner for the Clippers. Rei placed first in the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 10 inches and leaped to a season-best of 20-3 ½ to cop the long jump.
Brian Hamann took gold in the 25-pound weight with a heave of 49-1 ¼ and the quartet of Steve Healey, Brian Salemi, Dave Szczerepa and Rei combined for a time of 1:40.7 to win the 4x200 relay.
Next up for the Clippers are the Northern Division Championships on Feb. 5 at the PAF. Cumberland will be aiming for its 11th consecutive crown.
