Mount skates past Cranston West

January 22, 2011

Mount St. Charles rallied from a 2-0 deficit after one period to beat Cranston West 8-3 on Saturday night.

CRANSTON -- For the second time this season, Cranston West gave Mount St. Charles a run for its money, but in the end, the Mounties found a way to pull away from the Falcons and keep their unbeaten record intact.
The Mounties overcame a 2-0 deficit after a period of action by scoring four times in each of the final two periods and skated off with an 8-3 triumph on Saturday night at the Cranston Ice Rink.
Senior co-captain Trevor Plante notched a pair of goals (his team-high 13th and 14th of the year) to lead a balanced attack by the Mounties, who upped their Division I record to 9-0-1.
In their first meeting with the Falcons, a 6-4 win back on Jan. 7 at Adelard Arena, the defending state champs outshot their opponent, 59-25, yet found themselves in a royal battle with their visitors for two full periods.
But the Mounties silenced the suspense and any hopes for an upset that the Falcons may have held by scoring twice in the first six minutes of the final period to take a three-goal command and firm control of the game.
On Saturday night, the Mounties responded from their opening-period deficit and survived a 5-on-3 power play by the Falcons by producing the first four goals of the second period.
The Falcons battled back to make it a one-goal game before the end of the period on Ryan Kennelly’s second goal of the night with 1:09 on the clock, but the Mounties ruled the final 12 minutes and tallied their last four goals.
Brian Belisle, Alex Erban, and Shamus Maloney each added a goal and an assist for the Mounties, who tallied four power-play goals and held a 41-26 advantage in shots on goal.
Derek Deschene and Ryan Berard also netted goals, and freshman Brandon Borges notched his first varsity goal. Co-captain Zachary Samborsky was also good for a pair of assists.
The Mounties continue the public school part of its second-half schedule next weekend with a 9 p.m. home game against Lincoln on Friday and a 7 p.m. contest against Barrington on Saturday at Portsmouth Abbey’s arena.
