MARLBOROUGH- Sister Helena Menard, a Sister of St. Anne and known in religion as Sister Mary Eugene Alfred, died at age 97 on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011, at Marie Esther Health Center. She was in the 74th year of religious life.
The daughter of the late Alfred and Clara (Descoteaux) Menard of Manville, R.I., she completed her elementary education at St. James School in that city and obtained her high school diploma from St. Anne Academy in Marlborough. She held a B.E. degree in education from Catholic Teachers College in Providence.
In January 1934, Sister Helena entered the Novitiate of the Sisters of St. Anne at the Motherhouse in Lachine, Quebec, and pronounced her religious vows in 1936. Sister Helena returned to the United States immediately after her profession and her natural gift as a teacher found its place in schools staffed by the Congregation. She spent 22 years in the schools of Central Falls, R.I., and also taught in schools in Webster, Worcester, Holyoke, and Marlborough.
After retiring from teaching, Sister transferred to St. Anne Convent in Marlborough where she rendered innumerable community services such as bursar, receptionist, aide to retreat organizer, seamstress, and prayer and presence.
Besides her Sisters in community, Sister Helena is survived by several nieces and nephews, Pauline Badeau, Alfred J. Menard of Woonsocket, RI, Raymond Menard, MD New York City, Robert Menard and Dorothy Menard, Miami, FL, Ruth McKenna, Lincoln, RI and a grandniece, Sue Cournoyer.
Sister Helena will be waked Monday, Jan. 31 from 2 to 4 p.m., with a prayer service at 4 p.m., at St. Anne Convent, 720 Boston Post Road East, Marlborough. The funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, Feb. 1 at 10 a.m., in the Convent Chapel, with burial in St. Mary Cemetery, Marlborough.
