William Messere

NORTH SMITHFIELD - William Messere, 84, of Woonsocket Hill Rd., No. Smithfield, died Thursday, January 27, 2011 at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital. He was the loving husband of Elizabeth (Wright) Messere. They were married in 1958. Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late William and Eva Marie (Mathurin) Messere.
After graduating from Mt. St. Charles Academy, William volunteered for the army in early 1945 and while training for the planned invasion of Japan, suffered a debilitating eye injury. He was honorably discharged in November 1945 and studied architecture at Rhode Island School of Design for three years until no longer able due to his injury. After working as an architect for several years, he attended Boston University, graduating with a degree in Journalism in 1955. He went on to run his own advertising and public relations agency, William Messere & Associates, until his retirement in 1976. William was a talented photographer, artist and designer of fine furniture throughout his life and a computer enthusiast during his retirement.
William was the father of the late Matthew Messere, who died in October of 2008 and the late James Messere, who died in October of 2006. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, John Messere of Woonsocket, Michael Messere of No. Smithfield and Jeffrey Messere and his wife Mira of Burrillville, two daughters, Emma and Jesicca Benun of Lincoln, two brothers, Lloyd Messere of Cranston and Earle Messere of Marco Island, FL and one sister, Dolores Mason of Duluth, GA. He was the brother of the late Gloria Menard.
His funeral will be held Monday, January 31, 2011, beginning with visitation at 9AM, from the Holt Funeral Home, 510 So. Main St., Woonsocket, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30AM in St. Anthony's Church, 128 Greene St., Woonsocket. Burial will follow in St. John the Evangelist Cemetery, Church St., No. Smithfield.
