Mounties rout Hamden

HAMDEN, Conn. --- Senior forwards Trevor Plante and Alex Erban each scored a pair of goals on Wednesday night to help Mount St. Charles Academy bus home with a stellar 7-3 victory over Hamden High of Hamden, Conn. in this non-league showdown.
This battle features two of New England’s state champions. The three-time R.I. champion Mounties improved their record to 17-1-1 overall, while Hamden, Connecticut’s two-time state champion and the No. 4 ranked team in its state, fell to 7-3-1.
The Mounties, who outshot the Green Dragons by a 44-19 count, roared out to a 4-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of play. The hosts came back to score the next two goals, but MSC responded by scoring their other three goals in the final 7½ minutes of the second period.
Zach Samborsky also added a goal and two assists for the winners, while Brian Campbell and Derek Deschene contributed the other goals. Ben Handanyan was also good for a pair of assists, and goaltender Dan Foster stopped 16 shots.
Plante has scored a team-high 24 goals in the Mounties’ 19 games this year, while Erban is second with 18. Samborsky also leads the team in assists with 25.
Next up for the Mounties, who sit atop the Division I standings with a 12-1-1 record, is a showdown with Moses Brown on Friday at 9 p.m. in Adelard Arena’s friendly confines.
The Quakers, who are 10-2-1 and tied for second place with Bishop Hendricken, skated to a wild 6-6 tie with the Mounties on Jan 8 at Thayer Arena. In that game, the Mounties came back from a 6-3 deficit by scoring three times in the last five minutes of regulation.
