George A. Demers
NORTH SMITHFIELD-George A. Demers, 89, formerly of Eddie Dowling Hwy., North Smithfield, died Friday at the Rhode Island Veteran's Home in Bristol. He was the husband of the late Rita O. (Brouillette) Demers.
Born and raised in Woonsocket, he was a son of the late Albert and Marion (Asselin) Demers. He resided in the home in North Smithfield he built with his father for over 50 years until moving to Bristol.
During his teen years Mr. Demers joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked in Wyoming.
His service to his country began in the Army prior to the start WWII. After the attack on Pearl Harbor he enlisted in the Navy and served the duration of the war in the Atlantic Theatre on board the destroyer USS Melville.
Mr. Demers was employed at the former Custer's Garage in Woonsocket, Colonial Novelty, Grant Money Meter, and retired from Ciba-Geigy Co. Inc. in Cranston after 25 years.
George was a member of the VFW in Forestdale and was active with the YMCA, the Senior Fitness Club, Senior Olympics.
George was a supporter and fundraiser for Mount St. Charles Hockey. Along with his late wife Rita, he was an enthusiastic square dancer with the Fancy Squares.
He is survived by a son, Dean G. Demers of North Attleboro, a daughter Joyce R. Godfrin of Wakefield, five granddaughters, Danielle, Michele, and Darleen Demers, Wendy and Erin Godfrin, and a great-granddaughter Grace Thoren. He was the brother of Edna Morris of North Carolina, and the late Bertrand and Leo Demers. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their families.
His Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday at 10:00 am in Our Lady Queen of Martyr's Church, Park Ave. Woonsocket. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. James Cemetery, Manville. Visiting hours are Wednesday from 8:30-9:30 am prior to Mass in the Menard-Lacouture, 127 Carrington Ave., Woonsocket. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association of RI, 245 Waterman St. Suite 306, Providence, RI. 02906.
