LINCOLN- Ms. Christine A. Nowak, 50, passed away Sunday March 13, 2011.
Born in Providence she was a daughter of the late Joseph A. Nowak and the late Helen B. (Kopacki) Nowak who died March 8, 2011.
A 1978 graduate of Lincoln High School, she was a 1982 honors graduate of the University of Rhode Island where she earned a bachelor's degree in journalism and history.
Since 1997 Ms. Nowak was employed as the Director of Marketing for the Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce. Under her direction, the Chamber's 2001 Membership Directory was recognized as one of the best in the nation by the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives.
From 1982 to 1997, Ms. Nowak was employed as a staff writer at The Woonsocket Call newspaper. She served as a general assignment reporter primarily covering the towns of Lincoln, Cumberland and North Smithfield. She also was the newspaper's first business writer. While at The Call, she won several awards for theater reviews from the Rhode Island Press Association.
Ms. Nowak was a 2003 graduate of the leadership Blackstone Valley program. She was a member of the Blackstone Valley Historical Society and had served that organization as president, publicity chair, program chair and editor of The Landmark newsletter. She was a communicant of St. Jude Church where she was a lector. She served as publicity coordinator for the parish's 50th anniversary celebration in 1996.
She served as publicity coordinator for the Committe to Elect Sue Sheppard Lincoln Town Administrator in 2002; was a member of the Town of Lincoln Charter Review Committee in 1989; and a member of the Town of Lincoln 125th Anniversary Committee in 1996.
She was a member of the Friends of the Lincoln Public Library and had served one term on the Library Board of Trustees.
She was secretary from 1983 to 1988 for the Ocean State Chapter of Sigma Delta Chi, the Society for Professional Journalists.
In 1995, she was press coordinator for the national convention of the fraternal organization, the Polish National Alliance (PNA), which was held in Providence. She was a member of the PNA Lodge, Central Falls.
She was a member of the Tee Birds golf league at Country View Golf Club in Burrillville and was a former champion of the Town of Lincoln's Honest Abe Golf Tournament. She was a champion in the 1993 PNA National Golf Tournament, held in Charlton, Mass., that year.
She is survived by seven cousins.
Her funeral will be held Thursday March 17, 2011 at 8:30 a.m. from the Karol A. Romenski & Sons Funeral Home 342 High Street, Central Falls with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Jude's Church 301 Front Street, Lincoln at 10:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are welcome to attend. CALLING HOURS WEDNESDAY FROM 4:00 P.M. TO 7:00 P.M. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
