CRANSTON- Reverend Joseph P. Heaney, 90, Pastor Emeritus of St. Mark Church in Cranston, Rhode Island, died on March 17, 2011.
Born in Pawtucket, a son of the late Joseph A. and Mary (Nealin) Heaney, he attended Central Avenue Grammar School, Goff Junior High School and Pawtucket East High School in Pawtucket.
In preparation for the priesthood, he attended Providence College and Our Lady of Providence Seminary in Warwick Neck. He studied Philosophy and Theology at the Grand Seminaire in St. Brieue, France, and was ordained a priest on May 30, 1953 at the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul in Providence by Bishop Russell J. McVinney. He was a WWII Army Air Force Veteran.
Father Heaney served as assistant pastor at St. Patrick Church in Harrisville (1953-58) and at St. Mary Church in Pawtucket (1958-68). In 1968 he was appointed assistant pastor of the Cathedral in Providence. In March of 1970 he became administrator and team-minister at St. Michael Church in Providence. In January 1973, Father Heaney returned to the Cathedral in Providence as its rector and served there until October 1982 when he became the pastor of St. Mark Church in Cranston and remained there until his retirement as pastor emeritus in June 1991.
In addition to his parish duties, Father Heaney served also as Chaplain of St. Michael's Circle, Daughter of Isabella, vice-chairman of the Priests' Personnel Board and Vicar or Dean for Parochial Affairs, District I (1970-82). In the summer of 1981, he participated in the Catholic Charismatic Bible Institute in San Antonio, Texas, and in Steubenville, Ohio, Conference during several summers in the 1980's. He was also a member of the Grievance Committee.
After his retirement from parish administration, Father Heaney took up residence at Our Lady of Good Help in Mapleville; in 1994 at St. John Vianncy Residence in Providence; finally in 1997 at St. Agatha Rectory in Woonsocket, while helping out in various parishes.
Father Heaney leaves two brothers, Leo V. Heaney of Bedford, NH and Edwin P. Heaneyof Warwick, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Paul Heaney, Thomas D., and William A. Heaney.
Visitation is Monday from 8-9 a.m. in "WOODLAWN" Funeral Home 600 Pontiac Avenue Cranston followed by a Mass of Christian Burial for the repose of his soul at the Cathedral of SS Peter and Paul, Providence at 10:00 am on Monday, March 21, 2011. Burial with Military Honors will be at Mount St. Mary Cemetery, Pawtucket. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Mark Church, Cranston,, Precious Blood Church, Woonsocket, or the Cathedral of SS Peter & Paul. Online condolences
