Loal teacher recognized for innovative educational project

April 3, 2011

WOONSOCKET – Esther Lebron, an early childhood education teacher at Connecting for Children and Families, is the recipient of one of 50 Terri Lynne Lokoff/Children’s TYLENOL National Child Care Teacher awards selected from a pool of nationwide applicants.
Lebron will receive $1,000 during a ceremony at the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia on April 14, according to the Terri Lynne Lokoff Child Care Foundation.
Lebron was recognized for her proposal to implement a new educational project she calls “The World at Our Fingertips” in which she envisions using computers to enhance children's exposure to positive cultural messages.
“I believe this will help to engage the children in reading readiness, language development, as well as a variety of cultures and activities they may not experience on a regular basis,” Lebron said. “The goal for my children is to expose them to new material that will help in their growth, developmental skills and to introduce them to things that they might not be able to experience while at their homes.”
The cash award will be be used to purchase equipment Lebron needs to implement the program.
Like Lebron, all the award recipients proposed an enhancement project to promote educational, social and emotional benefits for children in their care. A committee of national early childhood educators and experts scored the applications.
Since 1994, the TLLCCF has presented 635 awards totaling more than $600,000 to early care and education providers.
“Child care teachers are professionals,” said TLLCCF Director Alan Miller. “Their curriculum-based lesson plans are designed to further children’s natural creativity and stimulate curiosity to explore.”
Based in King of Prussia, Pa., TLLCCF is a non-profit organization established in 1987 in memory of Terri Lynne Lokoff, a devoted child care teacher.
