Aceves could be heading to Boston

April 7, 2011

Alfredo Aceves, who was a late scratch from Pawtucket's home opener on Thursday, could be heading to Boston today.

PAWTUCKET – All appeared to be fine in Alfredo Aceves’ universe when he walked into the home clubhouse shortly after 4 o’clock on Thursday afternoon. The righthander chatted briefly with a reporter before going through the necessary preparations for that night’s start against Rochester.
Those plans were officially scrapped 15 minutes prior to first pitch, as Scott Atchison took Aceves’ spot. It’s believed that the Red Sox will place reliever Matt Albers on the disabled list on Friday and call up Aceves in time for Boston’s home opener against the New York Yankees.
While the PawSox announced Aceves as a healthy scratch just before gametime, Atchison had an inkling that was something was afoot earlier in the day.
“A couple of hours before the game they were hinting that something might be going on and that I might (start),” said Atchison, who went out and struck out eight in 4 2/3 innings. “I just went with that and prepared like something was going to happen and just rolled with that.”
PawSox manager Arnie Beyeler said he was told to pull back Aceves shortly after meeting with the media at 5 o’clock. Aceves did participate in the pregame ceremonies, lining up with the rest of the PawSox down the third-base line during player introductions.
“I’d like to see him go five innings and we’ll from there,” said Beyeler when asked what the plans were for Aceves. “If he keeps getting guys out, it would be nice to see how much he can extend with the pitches he has.”
Aceves’ impending arrival coincides with the Red Sox facing the Yankees, the club that with whom he won a World Series with in 2009. He missed most of 2010 due to a bulging disk in his lower back before fracturing the non-throwing clavicle in a bicycle accident in his native Mexico last December. The Red Sox signed him to a one-year deal in February.
