WOONSOCKET- Roger A. Cournoyer, 76, of Brookhaven Lane, passed away Friday, April 8, in Rhode Island Hospital, Providence after a brief battle with cancer. He was the husband of Muriel (Dussault) Cournoyer, and they had been married for 55 years.
Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Adelard and Aldea (Beauregard) Cournoyer. He was a life-long Woonsocket resident.
Mr. Cournoyer was a proud Veteran of the Korean War, serving in the United States Navy.
Roger opened his business, Rogers Tires and Front End Service in 1961, and operated it until his retirement in 1995. He served as commissioner of the Woonsocket Housing Authority from 1972 to 1977.
He was a member of the Woonsocket Elks Lodge #850, and was voted Elk of the Year in 2000. He also was the past commander of the St. Joseph Veteran Association.
He was a communicant of St. Joseph Church, Woonsocket. He was an avid fisherman, loved cooking, traveling, watching football and NASCAR.
Besides his beloved wife, he leaves his children, Debra Kociuba and her husband Walter, Donna Trindade and her husband Victor, David Cournoyer and his wife Darlene, Darlene Chakalos, Dawn Paquin and her husband Joseph; and twelve grandchildren. He also leaves his brother Maurice Cournoyer and his sister Rita Demers. He was the brother of the late Omer, Roland, Lucien Cournoyer, Gloria Delpivo and Lucille Fleuette.
A celebration of his life will be held Tuesday at 9 AM from the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122, Cumberland. Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in St. Joseph Church, 1200 Mendon Road, Woonsocket. Military Honors will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
Visiting Hours will be held Monday from 4 to 8 PM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited.
