Woonsocket outlasts Tolman, 8-7

WOONSOCKET -- Woonsocket High ran its record to 8-2 on Saturday with a hard-fought 8-7 victory over Tolman High in a battle between two Division II rivals.
The Villa Novans led 7-1 after five innings before Tolman climbed back into the contest with four runs in the top of the sixth inning. The Tigers tied the game at 7-7 with two more runs in the top of the seventh inning. But Woonsocket had last at-bats and it really mattered in this case.
Kory Lawrence, who went 3-for-4 at the plate, led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single and went to second base on a throwing error. He moved to third on a passed ball and came home on Josh Houle’s sacrifice fly.
“We finally scored some runs,” Woonsocket coach John Marsella admitted, referring to an offense that has played second fiddle to a strong pitching staff this season.
The Villa Novans didn’t get their usual great pitching on Saturday and the offense stepped up to win the game.
Lawrence also doubled and scored in the third inning when Woonscored score four runs. Teammate Andreas Bracket went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI.
Troy Sawyer went 3-for-4 for Tolman and scored two runs.
Woonsocket’s Josh Houle held Tolman to one run over the first five innings, then tired in the sixth and gave way to Aaron Andrews, who couldn’t locate the strike zone and was relieved by Lawrence, who finished up and got the win despite allowing two Tolman runs in the top of the seventh.
Woonsocket, which trails unbeaten Johnston by two games in the North Division, will visit Cumberland on Monday for a non-league contest and then travels to Westerly on Wednesday.
Tolman lost its third straight game and fell to 5-5 in Division II-Central.
