Locals shine at Schomp meet
Woonsocket High senior Jalen Evans captured the 100-meter dash at the Schomp Invitational on Saturday at Chariho Regional High. Evans was one of seven local athletes that earned gold.

The Woonsocket duo of Jalen Evans and Jessie Charette placed in multiple events, Evans finishing first in the 100-meter dash (11.40 seconds) while Charette was tops in the triple jump (44 feet, 1 inch). Ponagansetâ€™s Luke Jaffa leaped a meet-best 12-8 to cop the pole vault as the Chieftains captured the boysâ€™ team title with 55 points.
John Greenhalgh aided the Chieftainsâ€™ cause by finishing second in the shot put (48-4) and third in the discus (141-6). Cumberland, which finished tied for eighth, saw Andrew Baglini take third in the 800 (2:05.50) and Trevor Crawley finish second in the 3,000 (9:13.30). Lincolnâ€™s Dan Jannette was second in the 110 hurdles (42.10).
Woonsocketâ€™s Kaylnn Pitts was the areaâ€™s top female performer, copping first in the triple jump (36-10) in addition to coming in second in the long jump (17-0). Cumberlandâ€™s Amber Russell was the meetâ€™s top performer in the high jump, clearing the bar with a leap of 4 feet, 11 inches.
The Central Falls tandem of Aleide Fernandes and Steven Vazquez also earned individual titles, Fernandes won the shot put with a throw of 38-8 and Vazquez topped the field in the high jump with a career-best and state-leading height of 6-10.
