CUMBERLAND- Antonio V. Balasco, 87, of One Flat Street, passed away Wednesday, May 11, in the Heritage Hills Nursing Center, Smithfield. He was the husband of the late Carmela (Varrecchione) Balasco.
Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Antonio and Maria (Aucone) Balasco.
Mr. Balasco was a United States Army, World War II Veteran, and was directly involved in the infamous "Battle of the Bulge."
He resided in Cumberland for the past 9 years, previously residing Providence. He was a communicant of St. Patrick Church. He was also a member and avid volunteer for the Cumberland Seniors. He was such an active volunteer that now the award for "volunteer of the year" bears his namesake, the "Tony Balasco Award."
Mr. Balasco was the co-owner and operator of the Balasco Brothers Painting Company with his brother for many years.
He leaves his two daughters, Joan M. Billington of Cumberland, and Jane M. Balasco of North Providence; one brother Ernest Balasco of Wickford; one sister, Flavia "Florence" Soares of Smithfield; as well as three grandchildren, James, Michael and Matthew Billington. He also leaves his companion Alice Nault of Cumberland. He was the brother of the late Amadeo Balasco and Victor Balasco.
A celebration of his life will be held Monday, May 16 at 8 AM from the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122, Cumberland. Mass of Christian Burial at 9 AM in St. Patrick Church, Broad Street, Cumberland. Burial will follow with military honors in the St. Francis Cemetery, Smithfield Avenue, Pawtucket. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Visiting Hours will be held Sunday from 4 to 8 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Heritage Hills Nursing Home, 80 Douglas Pike, Smithfield, RI 02917 or to the Cumberland Senior Center, 1464 Diamond Hill Road Suite 1, Cumberland, RI 02864.
