Jalen Evans sets new WHS record in 400

May 14, 2011

Woonsocket High sophomore Jalen Evans, left, won the Classical Classic Large School 400-meter race in a new school record time of 51.0 seconds.

PROVIDENCE -- Woonsocket High sophomore Jalen Evans made some history on Saturday at the Classical Classic, setting a new school record of 51.0 seconds while winning the 400-meter Large School race. John Wilbur’s previous record of 51.2 seconds had been set way back in 1982.
Portsmouth’s Tyler Oliveira won the Small School 400 in 49.90 seconds, giving Evans something to shoot for as the championship meet schedule begins this coming Saturday with the Class meets.
Evans wasn’t the only local winner. Shea High’s Fred Gobewole won the 100-meter dash in the Small School Division with a time of 10.9 seconds. Gobewole is the No. 1 contender in his event as the state meet looms on the horizon in early June. East Providence freshman Ryan Williams won the Large School 100 with a time of 11.10 seconds.
Smithfield’s Brian Musard led a Sentinel sweep in the 1,500-meter Small School race, winning in a time of 4:19.70. Smithfield took the top three places in the event.
