Mount '9' waits to learn playoff fate

May 22, 2011

Mount St. Charles beat Cumberland on Sunday to finish 7-11 in its first season playing Division I baseball.

WOONSOCKET – Mount St. Charles will now sit back and see if a 7-11 record will be good enough to gain admittance to the 16-team Division I tournament. The Mounties stated their case one final time Sunday with a 2-1 win against Cumberland High. Garrett Hayward was the difference maker, blasting an inside-the-park two-run home run in the last of the sixth inning off of Cumberland ace Justin Patrick.
MSC trailed 2-0 in the last of the sixth when catcher Derek Deschene led off with a single and was replaced with pinch runner Dan Glod. A sacrifice bunt moved Glod into scoring position before Hayward blasted a deep drive to right-center that just kept on rolling.
MSC starter Taylor Sutherland allowed one unearned run in 5 2/3 innings, striking out six. Hayward’s blast made Collins Utterman a winner in relief after Utterman tossed 1 1/3 innings of scoreless ball. Patrick pitched six innings with one strikeout for Cumberland, which will take a 7-10 record into this afternoon’s finale against Smithfield at Tucker Field.
