CHATHAM, MA- Alice (Lemoine) Stifter, a loving Catholic devoted to faith, family and friends, died June 19 peacefully and surrounded by family in her home after a short struggle with cancer. She was 79.
Alice grew up in Woonsocket, R.I, graduating from St. Clare High School. She studied opera in New York City, performing with a Rhode Island opera company. She was the lead in a "Madame Butterfly" production at that time.
She married Francis Stifter in November 1959 in St. Charles Church, Woonsocket.
Alice and Frank reared five children in Natick, Mass., where the couple lived for 45 years. The couple shared their home with Alice's widowed mother who was a loving part of the family for more than 40 years.
Alice was an active member of St. Patrick Parish in Natick, especially with the perpetual adoration chapel; the Women's Club and SHINE (volunteer insurance counseling for elderly and disabled adults). She also was a volunteer participant in the Framingham Heart Study, one of the country's longest-running health studies.
Alice enjoyed entertaining, singing, church services and devotions, playing the piano and family time. She traveled throughout the United States and visited England, Europe and Canada. Her loyalty, love, generosity, compassion and smiles bettered the world.
Alice and Frank celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary among family and friends in 2009 with special Masses at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, Boston, and Holy Redeemer Church, Chatham; followed by a trip to Alaska and the Canadian Rockies.
She is survived by her husband of Chatham, Mass.; by daughters Alice Bartram and husband Sean of Stoneham, Mass.; Ann Van Brimmer and husband Adam of Savannah, Ga.; Kirstin Ahearn and husband John of Higganum, Conn.; and Paula Rivera and husband Tony of Lodi, N.J.; a son, Francis Stifter and wife Cheryl of Hampton Falls, N.H.; eight grandchildren; a sister and two brothers; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral will be held on Thursday, June 23rd from CARTIER'S FUNERAL HOME (phone 508- 883-8383), 151 South Main Street (Route 126), Bellingham, MA with calling hours from 9:30 to 11:30AM at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 Noon at St. Charles Borromeo Church, North Main St., Woonsocket, RI. Interment will follow in the family lot at St. Charles Cemetery, Farm St., Blackstone, MA.
