NEWPORT- G. Cameron Matheson, of Newport and formerly of North Smithfield, RI, passed away Saturday at the age of 81.
Born on March 27, 1930 in Union Village, North Smithfield, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.
He is survived by his wife Margaret (Dwyer) Matheson and their three children; his son, Gordon C. Matheson, Jr. and Diana McCartney of North Smithfield, daughters Christine and her husband Robert Boyaval of Saunderstown, and Kimberly and her husband Brian Doherty of Newport, and four grandchildren Emilie, Julia, Cameron and William.
He was brother to the late Barbara M. Monroe of North Smithfield and Douglas MacLean Matheson of London, Ontario.
Mr. Matheson was a graduate of the University of Rhode Island and served in the US Army. In his professional career he was a marketing executive for Sun Oil Company. He was very active in civic organizations and especially dedicated to Episcopal Charities of RI, serving as Trustee. He was on the SBA Advisory Council, RI State Yachting Commission, was past president of the 100 Club of Rhode Island and served on the Vestry at St. James Church, Woonsocket for many years.
He loved sailing and returning to his beloved Baddeck, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, where he spent all his childhood summers. He will be remembered for his humor, quiet assurance and generosity of spirit.
His Funeral Service will be held Friday, July 8th at 11am at Trinity Church, Queen Anne Square, Newport.
