City man faces drug, firearms charges

July 9, 2011

WOONSOCKET — The bouncer was already thinking about ejecting the drunk before the man showed the stripper a gun. Then he called the cops.
Derek Barron, 30, of Woonsocket, allegedly reached for the .357 Magnum in his pocket when police confronted him inside the Rhode Island Dolls lounge on Front Street shortly before 6 p.m. Thursday. Patrolmen Gregory Klocek and Anthony Conetta restrained Barron and took him into custody without further incident.
Barron was later charged with a string of serious firearms offenses, including carrying a pistol without a license; carrying a pistol while intoxicated; and possession of a firearm with altered or obliterated serial numbers.
Barron was also in possession of 34 tablets of oxycodone, a prescription painkiller, police said. For that, they charged him with possession of a controlled substance.
Barron refused a breath test, but police say he told officers he had consumed 10 beers before he was arrested. Police said they were called to the club featuring exotic dancers after receiving a report of an unwanted patron.
A bouncer told police Barron's behavior had already drawn his attention when when one of the dancers told him Barron had shown her a firearm. The revelation prompted the bouncer to call the police.
Based on a partial serial number lifted from the weapon, police are investigating the possibility it may have been stolen in Providence, said Detective Lt. Eugene Jalette, spokesman for the Woonsocket police.
