DOUGLAS- Carol A. (O'Brien) Swenson, 59, of Douglas passed away on Wed., July 13 from ALS (Lou Gehrigs Disease). Her husband of 27 yrs. David E. Swenson died Nov. 2, 2004.
She is survived by her daughter Kellie A. and her husband Joseph Cooke of Douglas, a granddaughter Audrey Cooke, her long time companion, George Loxley of Chepachet, RI and many close friends.
Born in Woonsocket on June 5, 1952 she was the daughter of John and Lillian (Lavoie) O'Brien and lived in Douglas many years.
Carol worked was a long time educator for the Foster-Glocester Regional school system. She taught special education, 6th grade, and finally as a guidance counselor. She retired in 2006. She returned to the Burrillville and Foster-Glocester school system as a substitute teacher for 4 years, until her illness. She was a graduate of Woonsocket High School, Class of 1970 and earned her BS in education at RI College in 1974. She later earned her masters in Education at RI College in 1978. Carol enjoyed sailing, kayaking, bicycling, traveling, and dancing. Always social, she especially loved spending time with her friends. Her passion over the years was working on her home.
Her funeral service will be held Sat. July 16 at 11 a.m. in St. Denis Church, 23 Manchaug St. Burial will follow at St. John the Baptiste Cemetery, Wrentham Rd. Bellingham. Calling hours at the funeral home in Douglas will be Fri. July 15 from 5-8 p.m. and Sat. July 16 from 9-10:30 a.m. Flowers accepted or donations may be made to Compassionate Care ALS, PO Box 1052, W.
