Arnold Sousa

CUMBERLAND- Arnold Sousa, 86 of Hilltop Road, passed away Sunday in the Grandview Center, Cumberland. He was the loving husband of Esmeralda (Gonzalez) Sousa.
Born in the Valley Falls section of Cumberland, he was the son of the late Cypriano and Theresa (Gomes) Sousa. He was a lifelong resident of Cumberland.
Mr. Sousa was a Life Underwriter for the Boston Mutual Life Insurance Co., retiring 1983. He owned the former Arnolds Market in Central Falls and also worked for four years at the former Owens-Corning Firberglass.
He was a WW II US Navy Veteran.
He was a former band member of the Pawtucket Portuguese Social Club, Pawtucket and the Club Juventude Lusitana in Cumberland, a former member of the RI Grocers Association, the Retired Insurance Agents Association. He was a life member of the Navy Seabees Veterans of America and the former VFW, Eugene T. Lefebvre Post 1271 in Central Falls.
Mr. Sousa played the trombone and attended the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston; He even took his trombone with him when he was inducted in to the Navy and played while in the service to help entertain the troops and boost morale.
Beside his wife he is survived by one daughter, Ramona DeRosier of Cumberland. Two grandchildren Crystal Holiday and her partner John Viveros of Cumberland and Alexander DeRosier of Cumberland; one step-sister Lucille Skinner of Plainville, MA; and two step-brothers Antonio and Armand Gomes of North Attleboro; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Raul and Anthony Sousa, Irene Botelho and Sarah Cahalan.
A funeral with Military Honors will be held Thursday at 9 AM from the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road Cumberland. Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Fatima Drive Cumberland. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cumberland. Relatives and friends are kindly invited.
