WOONSOCKET- Roger E. Whittaker, 79, of Woonsocket, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at the Greenville Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation. He was the beloved husband for 27 years of Evelyn D. (Turcotte) Whittaker and the late Barbara (Walsh) Whittaker.
Born in Providence on August 8, 1931, he was the son of the late Joseph and Alice (Barrett) Whittaker. He was the father of Robert B., Charlene and Cheryl Whittaker. He was the brother of the late Joseph Whittaker. He also leaves his brother in law Richard J. Turcotte of Woonsocket.
A resident of Woonsocket and formerly of Burrillville where he was raised. Roger was a machinist for over 20 years at Peerless Precision of Lincoln until retiring in 1994. He was a U.S. Army Korean War Veteran attaining the rank of Corporal and received the Korean Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He was a member of the VFW Pot 11519 of Woonsocket. He enjoyed trips to Newport, Washington, DC, playing cards and was a avid reader. He was a devoted husband and the first love of his cherished wife Evelyn and will be greatly missed.
Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, July 27, at 10:00AM at CARTIER'S FUNERAL HOME, 151 So. Main St. (Rte 126), Bellingham, MA. Interment with military honors will follow at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter, RI. Visiting hours are on Tuesday, July 26, at the funeral home from 5 to 8PM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
