BURRILLVILLE- Edward Allen, "Ted" Gartland, 67, passed away on July 25, 2011. Loving husband of 40 years to Suzanne Leduc, Ted was the son of John and Alice (Whittaker) Gartland of Nasonville.
He was born September 24, 1943, and raised at the Great Western Hotel. For 53 years, he was a member of the Nasonville Fire Department, holding multiple ranks, and serving as Chief for 4 years from 2001 to 2005. He retired in 2007 from the State of Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management where he was employed for 33 years. Post-retirement, Ted worked as a Emergency Medical Technician for Roger Williams Hospital (Mobile Care).
Ted was an avid camper, NASCAR racing fan, salt water fisherman, and retired Cub Scout leader. Ted was a former member the Northern Rhode Island Fireman's League, Rhode Island Association of Fire Chiefs, International Association of Fire Chiefs, and Greater Woonsocket Fire Chiefs Association.
Ted is survived by his daughter, Amy Magee and husband Keith of Newton, MA, son, Brian and wife Cheryl Gartland of Harrisville, and daughter Shelly Larson, and husband Bill, of Pascoag. Three grandsons, Andrew and Gavin Larson, and Owen Magee. He also leaves sisters, Evelyn Zifcak of North Smithfield and a twin sister Sandra Abrajano and brother-in-law, Robert, of Chicago, IL and a Brother John Jr. of Woonsocket. He is also survived many nieces and nephews. He was brother also of the late Dorothy Orlowsky and Kathryn Allaire.
In lieu of flowers please make donations in his memory to the Nasonville Fire Department, 2577 Victory Highway, Nasonville, RI. Calling Hours will be Friday from 5-7 pm at Keene-Brown Funeral Home, 445 Greenville Rd, North Smithfield. Memorial Service will be held at St. Theresa's Church, 35 Dion Drive, on Saturday at 11am.
